We are now seeking a Vice President of Engineering (internally titled “Head of Technology”) to lead Avaaz’s digital transformation and technical strategy — ensuring our global campaigning platform remains secure, innovative, and capable of scaling to meet the challenges of the next decade.

About the Role

The VP of Engineering will shape and execute Avaaz’s technical vision, overseeing software development, operations, security, and infrastructure. You’ll lead a talented, mission-driven team of engineers to deliver cutting-edge tools that empower millions of members to take meaningful action worldwide.

This is a strategic, hands-on leadership role ideal for an ambitious engineering executive who thrives in dynamic environments and is driven to use technology for positive global impact.

The position reports to the Chief Product and Technology Officer.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Define and communicate an ambitious technical vision aligned with Avaaz’s mission and long-term goals.

  • Partner closely with the Product team to translate business needs into scalable, high-performing technical solutions.

  • Champion innovation by integrating emerging technologies such as AI and modern automation tools.

Engineering Operations

  • Oversee the daily operations of engineering, infrastructure, and IT systems to ensure security, reliability, and scalability.

  • Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and service-level agreements to optimize performance and mitigate risks.

  • Ensure systems are fully operational, cost-efficient, and aligned with security and data protection standards.

Team & Culture Building

  • Lead, mentor, and expand a high-performing engineering team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence.

  • Establish a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and rapid iteration.

  • Develop internal leaders and ensure Avaaz’s engineering practices support sustainability and growth.

Financial and Technical Oversight

  • Manage the engineering budget, ensuring cost-effective resource allocation.

  • Oversee system architecture, full-stack development, data analytics, and cybersecurity frameworks.

  • Replace legacy systems with modern, off-the-shelf solutions where appropriate to improve maintainability and efficiency.

Qualifications / Requirements

Core Requirements

  • Proven experience as a VP of Engineering, CTO, or Head of Technology in a high-impact or fast-scaling organization.

  • Deep understanding of systems architecture, full-stack development, cloud infrastructure, and data security.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

  • Strong track record in strategic planning, process optimization, and budget management.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Commitment to global justice, citizen empowerment, and social impact.

Desirable

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (advanced degrees a plus).

  • Familiarity with web security, privacy, and regulatory compliance.

  • Experience implementing AI-driven solutions and cloud-based systems.

  • Prior experience in international or NGO settings.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: €110,000 – €130,000 per year (depending on experience and location).

  • Paid Leave: 5 weeks annual vacation + 10 paid holidays per year.
