Introduction

The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization dedicated to saving lives and strengthening health systems in low- and middle-income countries. Founded in 2002 to address the HIV/AIDS crisis, CHAI has since expanded its work to fight infectious and non-communicable diseases, support vaccine delivery, and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

With programs across 40 countries, CHAI works in close partnership with governments and the private sector to create sustainable solutions that deliver high-quality, affordable healthcare at scale.

As Senior Writer & Content Manager, you will lead CHAI’s content strategy and storytelling efforts—translating complex global health work into powerful narratives that inspire action, influence policy, and elevate CHAI’s impact globally.

About the Role

This senior management role bridges the gap between technical program teams and external audiences. You will lead the content strategy, creation, and editorial direction for CHAI’s global communications. The role requires exceptional writing ability, strategic vision, and a passion for using storytelling to advance global health and development.

You will manage a small but dynamic content team and collaborate closely with senior leadership, technical experts, and country teams to craft compelling narratives that position CHAI as a global thought leader.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Content Direction

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive content strategy aligned with CHAI’s organizational priorities and thought leadership goals.

  • Identify high-impact storytelling opportunities that highlight CHAI’s innovations and influence in global health.

  • Lead planning and production of flagship reports, high-visibility publications, and strategic thought leadership materials.

  • Manage the editorial calendar, content workflows, and approval processes.

  • Track content performance and adjust strategy based on analytics and stakeholder feedback.

Content Development & Quality Assurance

  • Write and edit high-quality reports, articles, speeches, and op-eds for senior leaders.

  • Translate technical program outcomes into clear, accessible narratives for donors, policymakers, and global audiences.

  • Oversee editorial consistency, tone, and brand alignment across all materials.

  • Lead production of CHAI’s Annual Report, including coordination, budgeting, and project management.

  • Create templates and frameworks to streamline content production across the organization.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor a Technical Writer & Content Producer.

  • Partner with program and country teams to uncover stories and insights that showcase CHAI’s results.

  • Collaborate with policy, advocacy, and communications colleagues to ensure strategic alignment and message coherence.

  • Support cross-team training and capacity building on writing, storytelling, and communications best practices.

  • Coordinate with analytics teams to evaluate and optimize content reach and engagement.

Administration & Governance

  • Manage contracts with external writers, designers, and vendors.

  • Maintain and enforce content governance frameworks and approval workflows.

  • Oversee workload distribution and team capacity planning.

Qualifications / Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Health, or a related field.

  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in content strategy, writing, or editorial roles.

  • Proven ability to craft compelling, accurate, and persuasive content across multiple formats.

  • Strong background in global health, international development, or public health communications.

  • Experience working in one or more low- or middle-income country settings.

  • Demonstrated success in project management and multi-stakeholder coordination.

  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience.

Skills & Competencies

  • Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling abilities.

  • Strong understanding of digital content trends, publishing workflows, and analytics.

  • Ability to translate complex technical topics into engaging and accessible narratives.

  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills with senior leaders and experts.

  • Strategic thinker with an eye for innovation and impact.

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Fluency in English (required); French, Portuguese, Swahili, or Spanish highly desirable.
