Lead Exposure Program
Lead exposure is a major but underrecognized global health crisis. An estimated 1 in 2 children in LMICs have elevated blood lead levels, causing irreversible neurological damage, reduced cognitive development, and long-term health impacts.
CHAI is launching a Lead Exposure Program to support governments and global partners in tackling this challenge. Program priorities are expected to include:

Market shaping: Accelerating adoption of lead-free products (e.g., paint), improving battery recycling, and increasing access to diagnostics.

Governance & coordination: Supporting national and sub-national strategies to address lead exposure.

Measurement & surveillance: Strengthening data systems and monitoring capacity.
Position Overview
The Director, Lead Exposure will lead CHAI’s global strategy and program execution on lead exposure. This includes:

Designing and implementing global and country-level interventions.
-
Driving market-shaping strategies to increase access to safer inputs and reduce lead exposure.

Building partnerships with governments, donors, suppliers, and global health stakeholders.
-
Mobilizing resources and positioning CHAI as a key player in the global lead exposure ecosystem.
This role will report to the Senior Director, Strategy & Innovation and work closely with CHAI’s Vice President of Innovation, Global Markets, Global Diagnostics, and country teams.
Key Responsibilities

Lead CHAI’s global lead exposure program and ensure high-quality execution across markets and countries.

Develop and implement strategies to expand access to safer substitutes, improve affordability, and strengthen market sustainability.

Engage donors, lead proposal development, and manage program reporting.

Coordinate with Ministries of Health, Environment, and Finance to design governance initiatives.

Oversee analyses of market dynamics, cost-effectiveness, and supply chains.
-
Build strategic partnerships with governments, multilaterals, NGOs, and suppliers.
-
Represent CHAI externally with donors, technical partners, and global forums.
-
Mentor, manage, and support staff in a matrixed environment.

Contribute to refining CHAI’s long-term strategy on lead exposure.
Qualifications
Required
-
Bachelor’s degree + 10+ years of relevant experience, or advanced degree + 8+ years of relevant experience.

Background in global health, environmental health, or policy/regulatory reform in LMICs.
-
Strong analytical, qualitative and quantitative problem-solving skills.
-
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
-
Proven experience leading multi-stakeholder, complex projects.
-
Experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
-
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
-
Willingness to travel internationally (~20%).
-
Alignment with CHAI’s values: humility, resourcefulness, and tenacity.
Preferred

Experience in market shaping, supply chains, or environmental health interventions.

Private sector background (consulting, investment banking, pharma, diagnostics, or chemical industries).

Experience in fundraising and donor relationship management.

Familiarity with cost-effectiveness modeling or economic evaluation.

Prior work with decentralized, remote teams.

Professional fluency in French, Hindi, or Swahili.

Experience designing monitoring, evaluation, and research frameworks.
