Introduction

The ASPCA is seeking a Director of Enterprise Data Management and Business Intelligence (BI) to lead the development and execution of a data strategy that enhances quality, accessibility, and strategic value. This role blends technical leadership with a mission-driven focus—building the systems, teams, and governance that enable the ASPCA to make data-informed decisions across all departments.

Founded in 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA operates programs nationwide to prevent animal cruelty and promote humane treatment through advocacy, rescue, veterinary care, and community support.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership (30%)

  • Build and lead a high-performing team of data professionals, including analysts, BI developers, and governance specialists.

  • Define team structure, roles, and training plans aligned with organizational priorities.

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, ownership, and innovation.

  • Manage day-to-day operations, deliverables, and performance metrics.

  • Provide coaching, feedback, and professional development opportunities.

Enterprise Data Governance (20%)

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive ASPCA-wide data governance framework.

  • Establish data policies, standards, and a governance council with clear accountability.

  • Identify data stewards and promote organization-wide data literacy.

  • Manage workflows, tools, and documentation to improve accuracy, availability, and compliance.

  • Communicate data governance concepts effectively to non-technical stakeholders.

Business Intelligence (20%)

  • Oversee the design, development, and delivery of BI solutions aligned with the data strategy roadmap.

  • Partner with departments to define reporting and analytics needs, translating them into actionable insights.

  • Advance the organization’s BI infrastructure and centralized reporting frameworks.

  • Manage enterprise BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Domo, SSRS) and ensure performance scalability.

  • Drive self-service BI capabilities and democratize access to trusted data.

Strategic Alignment & Process Optimization (30%)

  • Co-lead the enterprise data strategy with the Director of Data Engineering Operations, aligning architecture and tools.

  • Optimize workflows through automation and process improvements.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies (AI, ML) to strengthen data ecosystems.

  • Balance innovation with business priorities, leading strategic investments in data management.

  • Manage vendor partnerships and ensure effective project delivery.

Qualifications / Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of a high school diploma required; a bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience managing data teams (analysts, BI, governance).

  • Proven experience implementing enterprise data governance frameworks and master data management (MDM) solutions.

  • Hands-on experience with Business Intelligence tools (Power BI, Domo, SSRS).

  • Demonstrated success developing and executing an organizational data strategy.

  • Preferred: experience applying data science, AI, and machine learning solutions.

  • Preferred: experience in a non-profit or mission-driven organization.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of data management, warehousing, and architecture.

  • Familiarity with relational databases, SaaS platforms, and SDLC methodologies.

  • Working knowledge of SQL and programming (Python, Java) is a plus.

  • Ability to evaluate new technologies and scale BI tools.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Strategic thinker capable of aligning IT initiatives with mission objectives.

  • Excellent organizational and planning skills; adept at managing multiple priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate data insights into actionable outcomes.

Additional Requirements

  • Availability for occasional off-hours system support.

  • Willingness to travel up to 5% annually to ASPCA locations or training sites.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $145,000 – $157,000 annually (depending on experience and qualifications).
