Internship Overview

The Digital Communications Team seeks two Web Development Interns to support the enhancement and maintenance of UNDP’s web presence globally. Reporting to the Digital Production Specialist, the selected candidates will contribute to frontend, backend, or DevOps/system operation tasks based on their skill sets.


Key Responsibilities

Frontend Development (JS/CSS/HTML/Node.js)

  • Enhance and update the UNDP Design System.
  • Develop multimedia stories and hero content.
  • Improve templates and functionality within UNDP’s web content management system.

Backend Development (PHP, Drupal)

  • Create Drupal-specific features.
  • Integrate third-party services for Drupal.
  • Address bugs and implement user feedback.
  • Develop automated tests.

DevOps/System Operations (CI/CD, Cloud Services, WAF)

  • Maintain and enhance UNDP’s CI/CD pipelines.
  • Develop and integrate external services to support existing systems.
  • Create automated performance monitoring and hacking prevention systems.

Competencies

  • Knowledge and experience in at least one of the technical areas listed under Responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with programming languages and frameworks from UNDP’s technological stack (Frontend, Backend, DevOps).
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Enthusiastic, responsible, and responsive.
  • Interest in global issues and the mission of the United Nations.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity to political contexts.

Qualifications

Education

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in a graduate program (master’s level or equivalent).
  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a bachelor’s program.
  • Graduated within the past year and able to begin the internship within one year of graduation.

Experience

  • Working knowledge of programming languages/frameworks in UNDP’s tech stack is a plus.
  • Familiarity with IDEs and cloud services (e.g., GitHub, Azure) is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

Availability

  • Must be available at least four days per week.

UNDP Internship Terms

  1. Compensation
    • Internships are unpaid, and all expenses (travel, accommodation, etc.) must be covered by the intern or a sponsoring entity.
  2. Health and Safety
    • Interns must provide proof of health insurance coverage.
  3. Legal and Administrative Details
    • Interns are not UN staff members and may not represent UNDP in an official capacity.
    • The internship does not lead to employment within UNDP.
