Role Summary
The Technical Specialist, Data & Modelling Systems will contribute to the development and implementation of the SEforALL Energy Systems Model (SEM), based on OSeMOSYS and implemented in Python. The consultant will also support power system analysis using PyPSA and assist with policy analysis, technical coordination, and delivery of capacity-building activities related to national energy transition plans.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Development and Modelling Integration

Design and implement an online modelling and data visualization platform for SEM.

Integrate energy, climate, and economic models to enhance the usability of SEM.

Develop and apply data collection protocols and storage systems.
Technical Expertise and Power System Modelling

Lead the adoption and use of PyPSA for power system analysis.

Contribute to national energy transition modelling and decarbonization pathways.

Provide technical support to energy planning projects in developing countries.
Policy Support and Stakeholder Engagement

Conduct research and diagnostics on country-specific policies, technologies, and institutional frameworks.

Draft energy transition plans and support policy analysis and recommendations.

Coordinate with global and national partners, including public and private stakeholders.
Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing

Support the delivery of training workshops and technical capacity-building sessions.

Provide ongoing technical support and coaching for modelling-related tasks.

Produce and share knowledge products based on modelling results and analytics.
Deliverables

Development of the SEM online platform and visualization tool

Integration and operationalization of PyPSA within the Energy Transition team

Monthly technical support to assigned projects
Required Qualifications
Education
-
Master’s degree in engineering, economics, mathematics, energy, environment, or a related field

A Bachelor’s degree with 2 additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the Master’s
Experience
-
Minimum 5 years of experience in Python-based energy modelling (e.g., OSeMOSYS, PyPSA)

Proven work in energy transition planning and systems analysis, particularly in developing countries

Familiarity with integrating energy, climate, and economic models

Experience with developing online model visualization platforms is a plus
-
Advanced knowledge in Python or R for energy system modelling is preferred
Language

Fluency in English and French is required
