Remote Position

Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation seeks a Senior Software Engineer to join the Product Security team. In this role, you will work on developing security features and capabilities for MediaWiki, the platform powering Wikipedia and related Wikimedia projects. This is a hands-on role with opportunities to tackle unique security challenges at the scale of one of the most visited websites globally.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement security features for the MediaWiki platform.
• Review and deploy security updates developed by internal teams and community contributors.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure secure design and implementation.
• Address technical debt in critical security components and perform maintenance.
• Support incident response for application security issues.

Skills and Experience

Required Qualifications

• Extensive experience in software engineering with a focus on security.
• Proficiency in PHP with a modern, object-oriented approach.
• Experience developing client-side JavaScript applications.
• Background in secure software development and security product features.
• Familiarity with Linux command-line tools for web application tasks.
• Ability to communicate complex security concepts to diverse audiences.
• Sensitivity to the global security challenges of large-scale systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building anti-abuse mechanisms (e.g., CAPTCHA, bot detection).
• Expertise in security measures against web, backend, and database threats.
• Familiarity with threat modeling and secure design patterns.
• Proven track record of finding and resolving security vulnerabilities.
