Senior Site Reliability Engineer, Data Engineering
Location: Remote
Salary Range: $109,047 – $169,455 annually (adjusted for international applicants)
About the Wikimedia Foundation
The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia and its sister projects, aiming to make knowledge freely accessible to all. As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) focused on Data Engineering, you’ll contribute to the data infrastructure that powers Wikimedia’s global fundraising efforts, which support Wikipedia’s operational costs, its sister projects, and the Wikimedia Endowment.
Key Responsibilities
Data Infrastructure Development
- Manage and maintain distributed data systems like Trino/Starburst, MariaDB, Dagster, dbt, Superset, and Metabase.
- Implement and monitor data quality systems to detect and resolve issues.
- Integrate self-hosted and third-party data sources, including CRM (CiviCRM), Zendesk, and Acoustic.
Collaboration and Support
- Partner with Fundraising teams to enhance data usage and analytics.
- Provide engineering support during high-traffic fundraising campaigns.
- Work with Fundraising Analytics to gather, scope, and prioritize data requests.
Security and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with privacy policies and regulations, including GDPR and PCI DSS.
- Create and manage user access and permissions for secure data handling.
Documentation and Training
- Develop and maintain internal documentation for systems and processes.
- Provide guidance on data input best practices and process improvements.
Skills and Experience
Required
- 2+ years of experience in SRE/Operations/DevOps roles.
- Experience with high-availability distributed production systems.
- Proficiency in database administration and support.
- Familiarity with configuration management tools (e.g., Puppet, Ansible) and observability tools (monitoring, metrics, logging).
- Competence in scripting languages (Python, Go, Bash, Ruby).
- Strong Linux/Unix fundamentals and debugging skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
Preferred
- Experience with PCI compliance standards and containerization solutions (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Knowledge of package management for operating systems (Debian).
- Open source project contributions.
- Familiarity with the Wikimedia movement or the free culture movement.
