Senior Machine Learning Engineer (Remote)

Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to plan, develop, train, deploy, and manage machine learning models that enhance the functionality of Wikipedia and similar projects. Reporting to the Machine Learning Engineering Manager, you’ll collaborate with a global team and volunteer communities to deliver impactful ML solutions.


Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external customers (e.g., Wikipedia editors) to deploy scalable, production-level ML models.
  • Assess requirements, gather training data, train and deploy models, and monitor performance.
  • Engage stakeholders, including volunteer communities, to communicate progress and results effectively.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years in an ML Engineer (MLE) or MLOps role, maintaining production ML models.
  • Expertise with Python ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).
  • Strong background in Natural Language Processing (NLP).
  • Experience in collaborating with global teams and managing remote/async work.

Preferred Skills

  • Expertise in fine-tuning pre-trained models.
  • Familiarity with ETL processes and data pipeline orchestration.
  • Experience with pipeline tools like Airflow, Kubeflow, or Argo workflows.

Qualities

  • Independent and motivated self-starter.
  • Positive and solution-oriented.
  • Experience with open-source development and volunteer communities.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range (US applicants): $109,047–$169,455 (adjusted for non-US hires based on location).
