Manager, User Experience Research (Remote)

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a UX Research Manager to lead a talented team in advancing user-centered research that informs Wikipedia’s product, technology, and design across more than 300 languages. This role supports Wikimedia’s mission to provide free knowledge globally while fostering collaboration with diverse stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Build and manage a motivated, diverse team of researchers and program managers.
  • Research Oversight: Identify opportunities, oversee research projects, and inform product and technology teams to create impactful solutions.
  • Strategic Partnership: Act as a trusted advisor to leadership, promoting research-driven user-centered approaches.
  • Planning & Budgeting: Develop and execute an annual team plan while managing the budget.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate across Wikimedia teams, affiliates, and volunteer communities to align research initiatives with organizational goals.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Management Experience:
    • 3+ years managing UX researchers across different seniority levels in a large organization.
    • Experience coaching and mentoring teams.
  • UX Research Expertise:
    • 5+ years conducting or overseeing human-centered research.
    • Proven ability to translate research findings into actionable design and product recommendations.
  • Leadership Skills:
    • Experience working with senior leadership and fostering collaboration in complex environments.
    • Skilled at managing cross-cultural and multilingual research projects.
  • Education:
    • Master’s or PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Behavioral Economics, or a related field.
  • Communication:
    • Exceptional verbal and written English communication skills with proficiency in asynchronous collaboration.

Desired Experience

  • Methodological Expertise: Knowledge of mixed-method research approaches.
  • Community Engagement: Experience working with open-source or volunteer-driven projects.
  • Global Perspective: Fluency in languages beyond English and understanding of diverse cultural contexts.
  • Research Leadership: Published or contributed to research communities within the last three years.

Compensation

  • US Pay Range: $120,791–$189,762 annually.
  • Adjusted pay ranges for international candidates based on location.
