PEJ is a US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to addressing mass atrocities and human rights abuses globally. Using a victim-centered approach, PEJ provides training, mentoring, and legal consulting to build local capacities for justice and accountability. Through partnerships with local NGOs, legal clinics, and pro bono law firms, PEJ seeks to represent victims of international crimes and systemic human rights violations.
Job Overview
PEJ is seeking a Human Rights Researcher to join its dynamic, global team. This remote position involves monitoring, documenting, and advocating for human rights, particularly within Sudan, and supporting capacity-building initiatives. The role offers an opportunity to make meaningful contributions to justice and human rights advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Documentation
- Investigate and document human rights abuses using diverse sources such as individuals, grassroots organizations, open-source data, and official documents.
- Analyze and archive information in designated databases.
- Place human rights abuses within broader political, social, and economic contexts.
- Assist in preparing technical reports and publications.
Advocacy and Awareness
- Develop and implement advocacy strategies to highlight key human rights findings.
- Engage with government officials, media, inter-governmental agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Create multimedia and social media content to communicate advocacy goals.
Capacity Building
- Support the development and delivery of capacity-building activities related to human rights and advocacy.
Collaboration and Administration
- Engage with stakeholders in forums and working groups.
- Perform administrative tasks, including correspondence, organizing events, and writing meeting minutes.
Additional Duties
- Undertake public engagement to raise awareness of human rights issues.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the senior country team.
Qualifications and Attributes
Education and Experience
- Degree in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences, or related fields.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in human rights research.
- Experience with international human rights organizations and community-based organizations is a plus.
Skills and Knowledge
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice.
- Strong research skills and ability to analyze human rights issues.
- Knowledge of Sudan’s political and socioeconomic context is essential.
- Proficiency in conducting interviews and drafting detailed human rights reports.
- Fluency in English and Arabic (written and spoken) is essential.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, including oral advocacy and writing.
- Proficiency in social media and previous experience with human rights databases are assets.
