About the Role

The Nature Conservancy’s Impact Finance & Markets (IFM) division is seeking an Equitable Carbon Markets Advisor to ensure carbon market strategies deliver equitable social outcomes alongside measurable climate impacts. Based within the Global Carbon Markets team, this role will lead the social impact dimension of TNC’s carbon market work, including its Natural Climate Solutions Accelerator (NCSA) program.

The Advisor will guide how carbon projects engage Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and smallholders, ensuring benefit-sharing, inclusive governance, and grievance mechanisms are integral to every project. They will also shape global standards and buyer expectations for equity in carbon markets, while serving as the technical lead on social safeguards and community outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Strategy Implementation: Ensure the Equitable Carbon Markets strategy achieves both climate and social impact goals.

  • Support NCSA Projects: Evaluate stakeholder engagement and social outcomes, and ensure compliance with TNC’s safeguards and Bar of Excellence.

  • Inclusive Project Design: Help field teams implement benefit-sharing systems, strengthen local leadership, and build monitoring tools for social outcomes.

  • Global Influence: Shape carbon market rules and buyer preferences toward equity by sharing lessons and best practices from Indigenous- and community-led projects.

  • Partnerships and Advocacy: Build strategic relationships with NGOs, standards bodies, buyers, and investors to promote equity in carbon markets.

  • Capacity Building: Expand local community leadership in carbon markets through training, knowledge exchange, and partnerships.

  • Fundraising Support: Contribute to resource mobilization and engage financial institutions, investors, and donors on the value of socially equitable carbon markets.

  • Team Leadership: Supervise the Equitable Carbon Markets team and oversee social aspects of the global portfolio.

  • Cross-Organizational Alignment: Serve as liaison to TNC’s Indigenous Rights & Sovereignty, Human Rights, and Global Conservation Equity teams.

  • Travel: Up to 20% domestic and international travel required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation, social sciences, anthropology, public policy, international development, or related field.

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • At least 3 years of experience working with carbon, conservation, or development projects involving Indigenous Peoples, local communities, or smallholders.

  • Experience facilitating participatory workshops and consultation processes.

  • Proven ability to present to investors, donors, policymakers, and community leaders.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines.

  • Fluency in English.

Desired

  • Multilingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese, French, Swahili, Bahasa Indonesian).

  • Knowledge of carbon market standards (e.g., Verified Carbon Standard, Plan Vivo, Climate Community & Biodiversity Standard).

  • Strong political and cultural sensitivity when working with diverse stakeholders.

  • Ability to translate complex social dynamics into practical solutions.

  • Demonstrated leadership in decentralized, matrixed organizations.

Compensation

  • For U.S.-based applicants: $100,000 – $122,000 annual base salary (location- and experience-dependent).

  • For non-U.S. applicants: Salary will be set in local currency, based on the relevant labor market.
