Location: Remote (U.S.-based)
Salary: $62,400/year

About the Role

Climate Defiance is seeking an Earned Media Director to lead press outreach and earned media strategy across print, radio, television, podcasts, blogs, and more. The successful candidate will play a central role in amplifying the organization’s actions and messages through proactive media engagement and communications.

Key Responsibilities

• Secure media coverage for direct actions, campaigns, and organizational priorities

• Build and maintain relationships with reporters and producers across local and national outlets

• Write and distribute compelling press releases and media advisories

• Conduct outreach to TV, radio, and podcast producers

• Support message discipline and coach spokespeople for media interviews

• Serve as spokesperson as needed

• Travel frequently to support actions and events across the U.S.

Who You Are

• A skilled communicator who can stay on message and represent the organization clearly and compellingly

• Experienced in earned media, including writing press materials, booking interviews, and managing relationships with journalists

• A strategic thinker who knows how to leverage breaking news and action moments for coverage

• A collaborative team player with a commitment to justice, equity, and climate action

• Comfortable with nonviolent direct action and disruptive protest tactics

• Able and willing to travel frequently for actions and site coordination

Qualifications

• Professional experience in PR, communications, or journalism—ideally for progressive causes or direct action campaigns

• Experience crafting pitches and engaging reporters via email, phone, and social platforms

• Demonstrated ability to take interviews and speak on record

• Strong organizational and time-management skills

• Comfort working in fast-paced, dynamic environments with minimal oversight
