About Climate Defiance
Climate Defiance is a direct-action-focused climate organization that uses protest, disruption, and people power to hold fossil-fuel interests and political enablers accountable. The organization has successfully halted major fossil fuel projects and pushed prominent figures to resign.
Role Overview
As Distributed Organizing Director, you will lead a fast-growing network of volunteer-led chapters nationwide. You will be responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and mobilizing grassroots leaders to launch direct actions that challenge corporate polluters and political inaction. Your work will be central to expanding Climate Defiance’s presence and power across the country.
Key Responsibilities

Recruit and manage volunteers in existing and new chapters across the U.S.

Support the formation, structure, and growth of volunteer-led chapters

Deliver coaching, training, and mentorship to volunteers and emerging leaders

Plan and coordinate distributed direct actions

Regularly travel (approx. 25%) to support chapters through site visits and events

Maintain consistent tracking of outreach, participation, and chapter metrics

Resolve internal conflict and promote chapter sustainability

Energized by travel, grassroots activism, and volunteer management

Required Qualifications

At least 2 years of experience in community organizing, campaigning, or movement building

Experience managing teams of volunteers

Experience planning or participating in direct actions

Willingness and availability to travel up to 25%

Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing distributed organizing programs (multi-city, volunteer-led models)

Background in nonviolent protest or movement strategy

Experience in systematic conflict resolution within grassroots settings
