Role Overview

CHT is seeking a Director of Strategic Communications to lead its public-facing storytelling, media engagement, and strategic communications. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role ensures brand coherence, audience clarity, and effective dissemination of CHT’s work across media, events, and digital platforms.

The Director will oversee communications strategy, manage earned media, guide narrative consistency across channels, and supervise the Director of Content, who manages CHT’s podcast Your Undivided Attention, Substack, and content team.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Messaging

  • Lead organizational storytelling and narrative positioning on major issues such as AI regulation and disinformation.

  • Ensure brand coherence across presentations, media appearances, events, and publications.

  • Maintain CHT’s style and story guide, tailoring communications to diverse audiences.

Social and Digital Strategy

  • Amplify distribution of owned media (podcast, Substack, explainers) across channels.

  • Develop and execute integrated digital marketing strategies (website, email, social media).

  • Oversee social media presence in partnership with the Content Director, ensuring ethical and consistent messaging.

  • Direct production of multimedia content (videos, thought leadership pieces, campaign assets) with staff and external contractors.

Media and Public Relations

  • Design and implement media strategy to influence public discourse.

  • Manage the relationship with CHT’s PR firm and oversee earned media.

  • Lead crisis communications, crafting responses and talking points for high-stakes scenarios.

Dissemination & Campaigns

  • Co-create dissemination strategies for key initiatives (films, AI briefings, campaigns).

  • Explore partnerships, tours, and placements to expand reach.

  • Shape storytelling for donor events, convenings, and strategic gatherings.

Skills & Experience

  • At least 10 years of experience in journalism, strategic communications, policy, or media, ideally in mission-driven organizations at the intersection of technology, society, and politics.

  • Proven success leading integrated communications strategies across PR, marketing, events, and digital.

  • Strong grasp of U.S. political and media landscapes with sound judgment and integrity.

  • Experience managing teams and external partners in fast-paced environments.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to distill complex ideas into compelling narratives.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-impact campaigns and media relations.

  • High emotional intelligence, creativity, and collaborative leadership style.

  • Passion for CHT’s mission and commitment to humane technology.

Employment Details

  • Compensation: $180,000 – $200,000 annually.

  • Benefits: Generous PTO, medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with 4% employer match.

  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States (visa sponsorship not available).
