Registered in Tanzania since 2025, Panthera supports wildlife protection initiatives in western Tanzania by providing technical assistance, logistical backing, and financial support to conservation partners.
Role Overview
The Data & Technology Technician will work closely with the Tanzania Wildlife Authority (TAWA) to support the implementation and management of SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) for law enforcement monitoring. The role includes managing data flows, supporting field data collection, analyzing conservation data, and deploying tools like EarthRanger, GPS devices, and other conservation technologies.
Based in Tabora, this position involves regular travel to TAWA regional offices and protected areas, with occasional travel to Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and internationally if needed.
Key Responsibilities
Data Management

Support the collection, standardization, and cleaning of SMART patrol and ecological monitoring data

Ensure high data quality through control protocols and adherence to SOPs

Help TAWA produce SMART-based reports and maps to guide operational decisions

Assist with donor reporting on law enforcement and conservation indicators
Technology Deployment & Training

Support the setup and troubleshooting of field tools (e.g., GPS, satellite communicators, EarthRanger)

Maintain equipment inventories and assist with procurement and budgeting

Deliver training and mentoring to TAWA staff on using conservation technologies

Develop SOPs and training materials for both field and office use
Organizational Support

Join broader Panthera activities including wildlife monitoring and field operations

Maintain accurate records of technology-related expenses and reports

Participate in strategic planning and workshops with partner organizations
Requirements
Education
-
Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, conservation, ecology, or related field (required)

Postgraduate degree preferred
Experience & Skills
-
Previous experience with SMART, EarthRanger, or other conservation data platforms
-
Strong Excel and data analysis skills; familiarity with GIS is an asset

Experience working with large datasets and producing dashboards or visual reports

Demonstrated ability to train others in technical tools

Field experience in protected areas and ability to work in remote locations

Fluency in both Kiswahili and English (spoken and written)

Valid driver’s license required
