Role Summary
HFHI is seeking a Data Scientist to lead the development and maintenance of the Global Housing Index, a flagship data initiative aimed at highlighting global housing challenges and influencing policy and program solutions. The role involves managing data pipelines, designing rigorous housing index models, validating insights, and translating findings into actionable advocacy tools.
The ideal candidate will have deep experience in data science, particularly in real estate or international development contexts, and will work closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure the credibility and usability of the Index.
Key Responsibilities
1. Global Data Pipeline Management (15%)

Acquire and maintain large-scale international housing and demographic datasets

Ensure seamless data integration and accessibility
2. Data Standardization and QA (15%)

Clean, harmonize, and transform global datasets
-
Address inconsistencies across sources
3. Index Model Construction and Testing (15%)
-
Apply statistical and econometric methods to build housing index models
-
Iteratively refine and validate models using sensitivity analysis and back-testing
4. Insight Derivation and Validation (15%)

Analyze index outputs for trends and policy relevance
-
Interpret findings for both technical and non-technical audiences
5. Communication and Advocacy (15%)

Document methodologies and develop compelling data visualizations and reports

Support internal and external presentations and partnerships
6. Quantitative Research Support (10%)

Advise on research design for campaigns (e.g. Home Equals) and organizational initiatives

Guide teams on feasibility, partnerships, and data ethics
7. Internal Coordination (15%)

Participate in working groups, collaborate with Area Office and National Office staff

Support cross-departmental learning and communication
Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in applied data science, economics, public policy, statistics, or computer science (Master’s preferred)

Experience: 5+ years in applied data science, ideally with international and housing-related data

Languages: Fluency in English
Skills and Competencies

Advanced data wrangling and cleaning with Python or R

Strong knowledge of statistical modeling, data visualization, and communication

Experience with databases (SQL), APIs, and metadata standards

Familiarity with international development, housing markets, and equity in data use

Ability to lead complex processes and influence across functions
Preferred Qualifications

Real estate or macroeconomic data experience

Experience working with datasets from the Global South

Proficiency in GIS tools such as ESRI or QGIS
Compensation and Benefits

Salary (US locations): $72,250 – $85,000
