About the Role

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is seeking an Associate Director, Strategic Communications and Media to lead communications strategies across the Pacific Division. This role focuses on earned media, social media, crisis communications, and strategic storytelling that drive awareness, donor engagement, and conservation impact.

The Associate Director manages public and media relations, develops speaking opportunities for subject matter experts, and oversees high-level communication strategies to support both reputation management and mission delivery. They will also supervise staff and work closely with global marketing colleagues to ensure alignment and impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement an integrated communications and earned media plan to strengthen brand awareness and donor engagement.

  • Manage relationships with journalists and pitch stories to high-level outlets.

  • Oversee external communications for reputational risk and crisis mitigation.

  • Develop thought leadership strategies for senior leaders and experts.

  • Lead communication strategies for high-profile stakeholders, including boards and policymakers.

  • Oversee dissemination and amplification of earned media information.

  • Provide media training, talking points, and coaching for spokespersons.

  • Manage and mentor communication staff.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify media and communication opportunities.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.

  • At least 9 years of related professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proven experience in media relations and earned media placement.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic communication plans and measure results.

  • Experience managing staff and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong presentation and communication skills.

Desired

  • Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience.

  • Experience with reputational risk and crisis communication.

  • Familiarity with communication best practices in decentralized organizations.

  • Experience in conservation, nonprofit, or mission-driven environments.

  • Multilingual and cross-cultural communication experience.

  • Strong skills in negotiation, mediation, and fostering team creativity.
