Health Care Without Harm is a global non-governmental organization working to transform the healthcare sector into a leader for environmental health and justice. Through partnerships with healthcare professionals, hospitals, NGOs, and governments, HCWH promotes sustainable practices, climate action, and systemic change to reduce the environmental footprint of healthcare. HCWH’s Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network encompasses over 2,000 members in 86 countries, representing more than 70,000 hospitals and health centers.
Position Overview
The Health Professional Networks Lead will spearhead HCWH’s health professional engagement strategy, mobilizing health professionals to address critical issues such as climate change, air pollution, and plastics. The role emphasizes advocacy, capacity building, and fostering collaborations with global stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead the Health Professional Network Strategy
- Engage health professionals as champions for climate and sustainability campaigns.
- Develop partnerships with educational institutions and campaigning organizations.
- Mobilize existing and foster new country and regional health professional networks.
- Collaborate with HCWH technical teams to design and execute advocacy strategies focused on climate change, plastics, and air pollution.
2. Support Campaigns and Initiatives
- Guide health professionals to influence public opinion and advocate for clean air and fossil fuel transition.
- Train health professionals as media spokespeople and amplify their voices globally.
- Develop and disseminate resources, tools, and data to support advocacy goals.
3. Collaborate with External Networks
- Build partnerships with health professional associations, federations, and sustainability organizations.
- Strengthen advocacy for climate, plastics, and air pollution across regional and global platforms.
- Foster relationships with external stakeholders to align efforts and expand impact.
4. Representation and Mentorship
- Represent HCWH and its partners in international fora on climate, health, and sustainability issues.
- Mentor health professionals to advocate effectively on global stages.
5. Fundraising Support
- Support fundraising initiatives led by HCWH’s Climate and Supply Chain Directors.
- Engage with donors to advance work on fossil fuels, air pollution, and plastics.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or medicine (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5 years’ experience in climate, plastics, or sustainability advocacy within the health sector.
- Familiarity with climate change, pollution, and sustainability topics.
- Previous experience working with health professional associations and mobilizing networks.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong strategic and creative thinking abilities.
- Experience collaborating on effective campaigns and initiatives.
- Skilled communicator with strong public speaking and networking capabilities.
- Cross-cultural competency and experience working in diverse global settings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, and Asana.
Preferred Attributes
- Fluency in English; additional languages, especially Spanish, are a plus.
- Familiarity with global south perspectives and policies on climate and sustainability.
- Experience working in multiple countries or regions.
