Senior Engineering Manager – MediaWiki Interfaces

About the Role

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead its MediaWiki Interfaces team. MediaWiki powers Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, enabling the creation, storage, and sharing of open knowledge at scale. This role focuses on managing engineering efforts to enhance extensions and APIs that enable others to build on MediaWiki.


Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership:
    • Coach engineers of varying levels, supporting their growth and development.
    • Manage a diverse, remote-first team.
  • Project Management:
    • Ensure timely delivery of features and updates.
    • Plan and execute maintenance and migration tasks.
  • Technical Oversight:
    • Assess scope, difficulty, and impact of tasks and technical decisions.
    • Collaborate with technical stakeholders to align long-term strategies.
  • Community Interaction:
    • Engage positively within and outside the team.
    • Triage and address bugs, incidents, and ad hoc requests effectively.

Requirements

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Proven experience leading software engineering teams and managing backend platforms.
  • Experience with the full software development lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with leading projects in a high-traffic environment.
  • Experience with remote, multi-national teams.
  • Availability to work with UTC+2 to UTC-7 time zones.
  • Ability to travel internationally 2–3 times a year.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing open-source projects and collaborating with volunteer technical contributors.
  • Knowledge of MediaWiki or other large, monolithic codebases.
  • Familiarity with open governance frameworks (e.g., IETF, W3C).
  • Previous work with distributed teams.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range (US-based applicants): $147,423 – $234,074 annually. Pay is adjusted for non-US employees based on location.
